Glasgow City Basketball Club Details

Glasgow City Basketball Club was founded in 1982 by James ‘Mick’ McKechnie and Willie Cameron.

Glasgow City Basketball Club aim to provide opportunities for everyone to participate in basketball at their chosen level of performance regardless of age, gender, socio-economic background or disability. Operating in the poorest post codes in the country, we aim to use the lessons of performance basketball to have a positive life changing impact on the young people and communities of the East End of Glasgow. We aim to give everyone the opportunity to progress to performance level sport if they desire to, whilst providing quality outlets for those who don’t want to progress to remain within physical activity. Through coach education and official’s education we aim to provide chances for young people to progress into employment in the sport that they love.

The club enjoyed several names down through the years, St Mungo’s FP, G.E.A.R., East End Brightsiders, Glasgow Sports Division and Glasgow D2 as our initiative attracted sponsorship and local authority support.

Since our formation in 1983 the club has won 22 National titles at every age group from U16 girls to senior men whilst developing quality young people on and off the court towards collegiate level basketball further education, National team performance level and Professional sport and ultimately employment were social exclusion would have been more likely without our intervention.

Glasgow City Basketball Club has produced  countless international players to represent their country at all levels from under 12s to Senior level for both male and females.

Glasgow City Basketball Club continues to provide opportunities for all young people, their parents/guardians and volunteers to become involved. The club encourages fun participation, sportsmanship and the social aspects of sport to anyone interested in getting involved. All that is asked in return is that you respect the other members of the club, other teams and officials who support the game.

Glasgow City Basketball Club continues to evolve the club and build for the future.

Our athletes can get on court and train for up to eight hours a week with two, 2 hour individual skill development sessions and two, 2 hour team training sessions on offer, that's on top of all the added training we offer in their primary and secondary schools. With opportunities to compete in Regional Development Leagues, Glasgow Leagues, National Development Leagues, Scottish basketball championship Division two, Strathclyde League and Scottish basketball championship Division One, Glasgow City is renowned for being able to make progress and develop players in a quick, but enjoyable and lasting way!

Glasgow City Basketball club has a strong and active partnership with SportScotland and BasketballScotland and through this partnership have appointed  Community Development Officer who’s role is to co-ordinate with local Primary and Secondary schools to offer them basketball sessions within their schools to encourage and increase club membership, and create a development pathway from grass roots all the way through to performance.
